NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel on Tuesday said it has won a cellular Internet of Things (IoT) solution mandate with TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL), under which it will provide its IoT solution for 200,000 smart meters.

Of this, 70,000 smart meters will be delivered in the first phase, according to a statement by Airtel. TPWODL is a joint venture between the Odisha government and Tata Power.

“We are looking forward to deploying smart meters for billing in partnership with Airtel and making the best use of their IoT technology to deliver reliable and customer-friendly services,” said Gajanan Kale, Chief Executive Officer, TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited.

“With capabilities of remote network feasibility, advanced diagnostics and a future-ready IoT platform with readily available APIs for seamless integration, we are confident to serve our customers well in this space,” said Siddharth Talawadekar, Business Head – IoT at Airtel.

Airtel said it will use the “Airtel IoT Hub” under the mandate to help the utility track and monitor these smart meters with advanced analytics while maintaining high reliability with telco-grade security.

The Sunil Mittal-driven telco claimed that smart metering is one of the “fastest-growing service lines” within its IoT business.

As part of this partnership, the wholly-owned subsidiary of India’s Tata Communication has opened a Cyber Security Operations Centre (SOC) and managed security services to strengthen the cyber defence of enterprises in the region.

Airtel said it is working with multiple state utilities in Punjab, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar.

The Centre, on its part, has an ambitious vision of replacing 300 million conventional meters with smart meters in the next 5 years as part of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) initiative.

To recall, Vodafone Idea’s enterprise arm – Vi Business – in September said it has signed an agreement with EESL to install 50 lakh IoT-enabled smart meters for DISCOMs in Uttar Pradesh. Of this tally, 16.7 lakh smart meters have been installed already, with 5.16 lakh for DISCOMs in Haryana and 11.55 lakh for DISCOMs in UP.
